The Challenge

After choosing and instructing a roofing contractor some months before, the client became distressed to find the contractor suddenly unresponsive, leaving important details – and even the project start date – amiss.

The lack of effective communication created complications that caused further delays, including design issues that made it difficult to remain compliant with roofing standards and meet U-value targets. It also came to light that the architect’s brief proposed a roofing solution that not only went beyond the client’s budget, but also failed to include a mansafe system; a fall protection safety measure designed to keep workers performing tasks at height safe.

Heavy rainfall was forecast, and the client was stuck. With the risk of suffering roof damage due to the weather looming, as well as further delays and extra costs, the client contacted PFR.

What PFR Did

PFR stepped in at crisis point to offer innovative solutions that addressed the challenges the client was experiencing.

Despite a stretched work schedule, PFR mobilised within a week of agreeing terms with the client and got stuck in. Using our extensive experience and network of trusted suppliers, we were able to offer creative re-designed solutions to the client and their architect that met the required U values, ensured compliant drainage and significantly reduced the project cost to sit within the client’s budget. By removing the need to use costly vacuum-insulated panels, we could achieve an accessible roofing solution that met the client’s needs – including a compliant mansafe system that addressed the safety concerns – without breaking the bank.

Despite the urgency of the project, PFR used an Alutrix 600 VCL primer and layer to weatherproof the top roof in just one day. Moving at speed meant that the timber of the exposed roof was protected from potential rain damage that would have incurred further delays and costs to put right. With the top roof safe, PFR could focus on gathering expert labour and top-quality materials for the next stage – insulation and waterproofing.

The Outcome

It started as a project lacking critical details that could have far surpassed the client’s budget, endangered anyone working on the roof and extended beyond the client’s very reasonable timeframe.

Thanks to PFR, The Mill House Care Home’s roofing project ended as a supreme success.

The care home’s roof is now fully waterproof, safe and looking fantastic. PFR’s quick action ensured that the roof didn’t suffer any weather damage and the project was completed on time, within budget and heavily exceeding the client’s expectations.
